Reviews I Hate Hamlet at the Zenith theatre (Sat 27th March ) “Fun, clever, well acted! Suit the action to the word, the word to the action? Shakespeare, Hamlet, act3, scene 2. Here we see direction, acting lighting – all that wonderful theatre stuff suited to the play. Admirably. The coffin and the rose – the ‘just juice’ carton that defiantly replaces the champagne in the last scene, the movement of the follow spot - strokes of genius. Well done!” Leo Donoghue (film producer and critic radio NB) Phoenix Theatre Productions 2004 season in Chatswood has opened with a real winner: Paul Rudnick’s hit comedy I Hate Hamlet. I saw the Sunday performance on March 21 and found it delightful. This very funny play really came to life uner the skilled direction of Roz Riley. An excellent cast headed by DanielMcCallum as young actor Andrew and Adrian Snodgrass as the ghost of John Barrymore, included Belinda Marques, Peter Theodore, Kath Perry and Sylvia Allewelt. A good set, music and lighting enhanced the atmosphere. A promising but inexperienced soapstar who is more familiar with TV than stage techique, is called upon to tackle one of the Bard’s most demanding roles. Although he receives help from a most unexpected source, Andrew is still doubtful about his ability to play Hamlet. He finally decides to accept the challenge and the fun rolls on. A great show. Encore! Francis Shoolman, Performing Arts Journal. |
